At Live Edge Massage Therapy & Wellness, we appreciate and encourage our clients to maintain good personal hygiene. This is important for a person’s physical, mental, and social health; it helps prevent against infections, as well as discourages one to become isolated and lonely.
As part of our clinic policies and expectations, here are some important points we encourage our clients to be mindful of:
👃Scent free environment: Our clinic policy is that client’s arrive wearing NO strong perfumes or colognes, as other clients and our therapists can have sensitivites to such products.
Unscented, fragrance-free, or lightly scented deodorant or shampoo are ok, but if you’re unsure, please don’t wear it.
🩹Open sores/wounds: For everyone’s safety, we ask that you cover these with a protective barrier so as to limit the risk of infectious disease/illness transmission.
As per our governing board, RMT’s must do so as well.
😰Bodily functions - they happen: as massage relaxes the body, it can improve digestion which can result in a client passing gas - it's ok! This is completely normal, and not someting for you to be anxious about before, during, or after your treatment.
Stay clean and healthy, and we look forward to meeting you!
Referred pain - when you experience pain in a particular area of your body, although the pain is originally from a different area
Why does this happen? Our bodies are made up of a large network of nerves. When these nerves sense pain on one area the body, they send that pain signal to the brain, which can then send the pain signal to a different area than where the nerve picked it up.
Because of this, your RMT may focus on and treat a different area of your body than where your nervous system is sending the painful feeling to - we are searching for the root of the problem 💆♀️➡️🕵️♀️
At Live Edge, we never want our clients to feel unheard or that we are not treating them as effectively as we can. Ask us if you have a questions about referred pain or anything else, we would be happy to explain 🙂
After receiving a massage, it is possible that you will experience DOMS - Delayed-Onset Muscle Soreness
What is DOMS and why does it happen?
Just as exercise does, massage stimulates blood flow to your muscles, which can create a temporary inflammatory response that can be uncomfortable.
This inflammation is a good thing! Although it can be uncomfortable, this is your body pumping nutrients into your muscles, and toxins out.
DOMS typically begins a few hours after massage, and can last 24-26 hours after, but everyone's response can be different.
Can anything be done to reduce it?
Yes, there are several things that can be done to try to reduce the discomfort of DOMS:
✖️Type of massage: Not all massage techniques use the amount of deep pressure that typically causes DOMS. For example, a relaxation massage would use less deep pressure than a deep tissue massage or trigger point therapy. We make sure to check in with our clients throughout the treatment to ensure our pressure is right for you.
☀️Heat/❄️Cold therapy: After your massage, try using a heating pad, or an ice pack on the area you're feeling discomfort. Each person's response to either therapy is different, so try both and see what makes you feel the best.
⏰Frequency of massage: The more often you have a massage, the more muscle memory your body builds, and you'll be less likely to feel as sore after.
🤸♀️Stretching: Stretching the muscles treated after your massage can increase circulation and speed up the inflammation process. A light walk, or some gentle exercises can help. At Live Edge, we can show you various remedial exercises to assist with this.
Sometimes, people avoid manual therapies such as massage therapy due to the cost:
However, massage therapy is an effective means of preventative health care – it can assist your body in resisting numerous health problems down the road. These health problems could end up costing more than what a routine preventative health care cost like massage therapy will cost you.
If you’d like to inquire about any of the service costs at Live Edge Massage Therapy & Wellness, please refer to the "Services" tab on our website, or contact us with any questions you may have – we look forward to meeting you
